ObamaBush

I could have sworn that we got rid of Bush with the last election but I’m wondering.  On Obama’s fourth day in office he sent missiles into Pakistan killing 14 people.   We launched at least 44 missile strikes into Pakistan, a supposed ally, last year.  Residents interviewed by The Associated Press in Pakistan's North Waziristan tribal area, the site of a majority of the strikes since the program began in 2004, said they believe almost all of the victims are innocent civilians.  A criticism of Bush was that he attacked sovereign nations without a declaration of war.

Another criticism of Bush was his use of signing statements.  A signing statement is made by a President stating that although Congress has passed a law he will only follow that portion of the law that he agrees with.  In his first signing statement Obama stated he did not agree with the law passed by Congress which is to protect government whistleblowers from retribution from executive office officials.  The New York Times reports that Obama has already written dozens of signing statements.

Bush never heard a request from the arms merchants that he did not like but Obama is about to submit the highest budget request ever for the Pentagon.  The $708 billion does not include the expect $30-40 billion for “emergency” funding in the eighth year of our Afghanistan/Iraq/Pakistan War.  Not satisfied with that bit of spending Obama has deployed 1400 U.S. troops to the seven new bases we have built in Colombia.  These are added to the over 700 military bases we have around the world.

Obama will also complete new U.S. military bases in Bulgaria and Romania where he is stationing 4,000 of our troops.  If that isn’t provocative enough to Russia Obama is stationing a Standard Missile-3 battery with 100 U.S. troops in Northern Poland only 35 miles from the Russian border.  The Pentagon will deploy command posts of SM-3 missiles, which can intercept both short- and mid-range missiles.   An SM-3 was used by the Pentagon to shoot a satellite out of orbit in February of 2008 to give an indication of its range.

Not enough war mongering for you?  The Pentagon, under Obama’s command has signed a deal with Taiwan to deliver 200 Patriot Advanced Capability anti-ballistic missiles.  How would we feel if the Red Chinese agreed to sell a similar arsenal to Puerto Rico or the Dominican Republic?   Without apparent irony Obama in his Nobel Peace Prize speech stated “modern technology allows a few small men with outsized rage to murder innocents on a horrific scale”.

I was recently talking with someone who said she appreciated my letters to the editor.  She also said that we need to give Obama more time since he inherited such a mess from Bush.  We could help Mr. Obama by providing him with a Congress that would put his feet to the fire.  One person running for Congress who would do this is Cheryl Crist.  Find information about her at www.cristforcongress.us.
